Title: 68 lower windshild trim spacers
Post by: ruppstang on December 22, 2010, 11:57:45 PM
Can anyone tell me if the SJ plant was using the plastic spacers in the lower windshield trim to protect the paint on the fenders in late 1968? Marty

I know NJ was throughout the year. Haven't taken apart too many SJ 68s

Marty,

My 67 San Jose convertible still had one in place on the passenger side, so it is possible that San Jose did use the plastic clips. Hard to find, but easy to install.

I have a pair off a SJ 67 coupe. I was going to put them on the SJ 67 GTA convertible. Given the difficulty in removing the windshield trim with out causing damage I was thinking of using them on the SJ 68 HCS provided that SJ was still using them in mid July 1968. Marty

Don't recall seeing them on a coupe - but could have always missed them on any of the dozens I've taken apart or the hundreds/thousands I've seen in yards.

Will keep an eye open for one

I haven't studied the detail much, but the service replacement lower windshield moldings have a slot on the ends where the plastic spacer fits into.  The original 65-66 lower windshield moldings don't have the slots.

I do not have a picture of one in the trim piece. It is easy to miss when in the trim only about 1/16th of it shows. Here is one of the pair that I have. Marty

I believe they all had them or were supposed to get them. Because of the way it just presses in most of them probably blew out first time it went through a car wash. No concern from Ford that it stayed there as after fenders were on it serves no purpose.

Look similar or the same as the ones I've found on 69's

Thanks everyone for your thoughts. I know they were used in 67 and if Jeff says they were used in 69 I think it is safe to assume that they were used in 68. Marty

I know this post is old; but I took a picture today of a 1968 windshield moulding with the spacers still in place.  I've noticed on recent trips tp the local bone yard that many of the 67-68 mouldings had these spacers (a lot are missing too).  The majority with them in place had two on each side as pictured.  I also observed a 66 moulding today and noticed the "cut outs" for these spacers were not present on that particular moulding.

That is interesting Danny I have never seen two on a side like that.

The majority of cars I found had two per side, most were Metuchen cars.

The ones that I have are from San Jose cars that just had one on a side. May be Jeff can shed more light on the SJ cars. It may be a plant thing.

Haven't studied this particular detail though its more than likely a worker thing - of course one worker would share short cuts and practices often with another at the same plant. Just a thought/possibility

According to the MPC's (Ford and Mercury) the part number is C7ZZ-6503150-A and the call out is for four of them to be installed 1967-68 Mustang and Cougar. They obviously fit into the cut outs on the lower windshield moulding. I found them on 1967 Dearborn and 1968 San Jose Cougars. Never found one in the end position, only the location in the picture which roughly is over the fender and cowl joint. They are visible when installed, barely.

There are 3 different spacers listed for 1969/70.
C9ZZ-6503150-A (MPC) or C9ZB-6503150-F (Body Assy Manual) 1 installed center of cowl, and it is 2 inches wide.
C9ZZ-6503150-B (MPC) or C9ZB-6503150-H (Body Assy Manual) 2 installed per car, one over each fender, and it is 3/4 inches wide.
C9ZZ-6503150-C (MPC) or C9ZB-6503150-G (Body Assy Manual) 4 installed per car, over the cowl and it is 3/4 inches wide.

This shows the differences of them. The 2 inch wide version is the same as the cowl one but 2 inches wide.

And as Danny found, those cut-outs are not present on 65-66 cars... but the NOS service replacement lower molding is almost always the later design, yet carries a C5ZZ number.  Typical Ford superseding of part numbers, one size fits all.
