Title: Power steering pump
Post by: cam shaft on April 06, 2020, 05:28:20 PM
At some point in years prior,  the power steering pump to our 1979 gt500 was replaced, with an HBA-BF.. Would this be the correct pump for this application?.

Thank you

HBA-BF is not correct for 69/70 GT350. It will work just fine but not the one the car was born with. The assemblyline one is HBA-BK.

The HBA-BF should be correct for a GT500.  This is the designation for the 428 Cobra Jet PS pump.

I think Bob is correct from what I have seen. The HBA-BF would work but it likely has a date code far earlier than the car. The HBA-BK looks nearly identical - if not identical - so maybe you just need to find a HBA-BK tag with an appropriate date for your car. Then swap the tag. Note that the tags have a lot of information including the date and manufacturer. It could be either Ford or TRW.

Also worth noting the reservoir and PS pump bracket are specific to either TRW or Ford. So those items can also be identified as matching the tag or not. Same with the paint color used on the pump and reservoir. Ford pumps are a special teal color. TRW pumps are black.

OK, school me please.  If a HBA-BF is correct for a '69 428 CJ car why would it not be correct for a '69/'70 Shelby GT500?  I have BF pumps with date codes 8M and 9B by the way.  What am I missing?

Well it might be - if the tag date code is appropriate for the car. Since 1969 Shelbys were rebadged as 1970 Shelbys then there is a good chance. The OP has not said yet what the date code is on his pump or what day his Shelby was actually built.

The HBA-BF PS pump is correct for a 69 /70 GT500 . HBA-BK is correct for 69/70 GT350.
