Hello all,
Does anyone have the original height measurement of the HiPo air filter? I recently purchased a NOS C0AE-9601-C air filter for my 63 406 Galaxie and it is the more maroon-ish color rather than the brighter orange color seen on later NOS air cleaners (67 and on I believe) as well as the repro air filters out there.
I plan to use this filter as a temporary substitute air filter for my 65 HiPo Fastback until I am able to attain a more accurate filter. Will this filter appear somewhat at home on my 289 HiPo or should I not even bother and put my Scott Drake repro air filter back on? I noticed the filter paper, punched holes (both in size and spacing) are different to the Scott Drake version.
I measured this C0AE-9601-C filter to be about 2 3/4" in height, 13 3/4" in outer diameter and 10 13/16 in inner diameter.
Any info would be greatly appreciated!

Yes the maroon color is typical of genuine 65/66 hipo filters however the filter you have is for a different application and noticeably taller compared to the factory filter. The color difference is not something that many are aware of or would notice is different. The taller filter on the other hand is noticeable as not original compared to a correct original or even the repro hipo filter. You may want to consider a perspective that is relevant to your concern about what is more correct ,From a concours judging stand point many judges may not even mention the color different in the rubber but the taller filter is just wrong and would be points deducted.

I had a very strong inclination that this filter was too tall for a 65/66 HiPo mustang.
Did the very early HiPo Mustangs that came with the double hump air cleaners from the Cobra and other earlier cars use the same filters as the 65/66 HiPo Mustang?

Yes the double hump Mustang and Cobra air cleaners used the same hipo filter .The taller one is a fullsize car application. Some of the very first 65 GT350's had the filter switched to the taller version but discontinued the use after a very short period .
