Title: 1965 GT Alternator Wiring Harness -
Post by: jwc66k on April 27, 2020, 03:23:05 PM
I know that 65 GT Mustangs (also 65 Mustangs with the delux interiors) use special wiring harnesses (alternator, under hood, under dash) to display current on the alternator gauge. Can the wiring harness used on a 65 GT alternator be used on a non GT alternator, both for 1965 and 1966?

No.  The 1966 alternator harness has a lead for the ammeter, so it's not compatible with the 65GT version.  All other 65's use alternator indicator lamps, which require different wiring for the VR (and presumably) for the alternator.

Hi Jim,

Regarding the only alternator wiring harness itself.  The 1965 alternator wiring harness has contains an extra connector (near red cap) for the "External Radio Interference Suppression Condensor" that is is not required in 1966 since the radio interference suppressor condensor was built into the Alternator itself in 1966.  Other than that 1 difference - it is my understanding that the alternator harness is to be the same for both 1965 and 1966

PS - The 1965 FACTORY Deluxe/Pony and/or GT Gauge Package underdash portion of the wiring harness is totally different than the 66 version (which is what Randy was alluding to above). Virginia Mustang has blog post from 2008 (with pictures) that does a good job of explaining that.

Thanks Ron.
The original question was based on a friend's 65 GT Convertible. The owner installed the standard 65 alternator harness and now the car won't start. I told him it's something else. It was a rhetorical question about interchangeability between 65 and 66 alternator harnesses (I have both, a 65 GT Fastback, and a 66 GT Fastback).
