I have an early 65 (feb build date). The water pump is cast iron and the only marking on it is "PH-288" Everything I read indicates early 65's had aluminum water pumps. Is this pump correct? See Pic.
Are these pumps rebuildable and if so what is involved? difficulty?

I haven't seen a cast iron after market version to the assemblyline aluminum pump in quite a few years. Your pump is a replacement.

Your February '65 car should have an aluminum pump.

Your timing cover should be correct to accept an aluminum water pump based on the small picture of your pump. The pump that you have is a bolt-on aftermarket pump that was made out of cast iron (instead of aluminum) because it was thought, back in the day, that the iron pump was more durable than the aluminum pump. Your timing cover will not accept a factory-style cast iron pump however, that was used later in '65 or there after.

It is unusual to see a cast iron version of the aluminum style waterpump which is why I said what I did.Yours is different to the late 65-70 cast iron waterpump. Another way of saying it is that your pump is a after market waterpump designed after the factory aluminum waterpump so that it will fit the assemblyline timing cover the car was born with. I don't know how to say it better another way. Your situation is a good thing because all you have to do is install a factory aluminum waterpump and you are done .

Thanks everyone for the good news. I really don't want to replace things (timing chain cover) if I don't have to.
