Stumbled across this one for the first time. Was hitting up the Cougars looking for a power window car. This does not have power windows, but I noticed the rag joint (picture 1) and went back to look and noticed the steering column (picture 2)

OK let's play the guessing game. Take a look closely at the engine compartment and try to figure out what this car is/was.
-
Well a number of things appear to have been changed since the car rolled off the assembly line if it's not a mistake car.
Looks like it had custom fender well headers (possibly). Great ::) torch work
Will leave room for others to play :-X
Hope you got the VIN so we can see how close we can get it narrowed down to.
-
yep, have the VIN.

some more pics

Power windows were not optional, standard or available in a 1968 Cougar.
-
Appears to be a '67 with tilt away. The brakes and booster / pedal assembly would also need to go home with me.

With wrap around shock towers , single piston brake caliper ,spindle and rotor?
-
That is not a 1968 Cougar horn pad.
-
Has to be a late (March or later) '68 390 or 428 with those wraparound shock towers. Could be an R, S, or X code according to what I have seen.
-
Doing very good so far, collectively speaking!
-
Yes, big block shock tower. But I see a small block engine mount left behind.
-
It has certainly been around the block a few times, and put away wet. VIN attached.
So should this car be yanked out of the grave for someone to tinker with, or should I strip whatever is left that has value?
-
It's worth saving. Need to get it out of there. The full VIN needs to be reported to the R code Cougar Registrar. PM me for contact info.
-
PM sent.
Also based on the current state of car sales, I think I need to drag this out, stick it in a barn, throw some empty boxes on it... The barn find should add 20% to the value lol

Nice find - the challenge is often after you find it. What do I do with it, where do I store it and in some families how do I keep my loved one from knowing I bought and brought home another.
Often, during when I was dealing in cars and parts allot, things like this would be turned within 24 hrs for quick money. If they ran then maybe a week :) Then of course there were plenty of ones I left - wondering at times what ever happened to them or seeing the car later to find out the owner sold it for half what I had offered for it ::)
All about the timing
