Ive been trying to verify the paint stripes on my driveshaft, I did take picks and measurements and color notes prior to cleaning. The three middle stripes are not in question, they are the same as the thread posted below. Im trying to verify the stripe closer to the end near the axle. My stripe 'looked' white and was about 11-12" from the welded flange. The thread below is an M code 4 bbl with an Orange stripe. Question: should my stripe be white or orange? I dont think the drive shafts are the same for 2 bbl and 4 bbl as the MPS only differentiates between transmissions and not carbs. The MPS does call out 351 drive shafts with 31 spline axles which I figure is the 4 bbl 351 and the 28 spline 351 is the 2 bbl. There are dimensional differences in the drive shafts and the u-joints specified for each so Im leaning toward the orange stripe near the axle end is the 4 bbl 351 and the white stripe near the axle end is the 2 bbl 351. Thoughts?

Buildsheets of a H code three speed car built in June 70 show the identification stripes as Green - White - Yellow. Green appears to be a lighter version than we often see used representing GRN on build sheets. The rear stripe is not part of the identification set so its not in the buildsheets or recorded anywhere that I know of. You stated that your stripe about 11-12" from the flange "looked" white. Did you take off the top layer and look below where it had not been exposed to the elements. Since the strips purpose is unknown it may be possible that drivelines for the same applications had different colors at the rear end of the tube since it could identify a particular machine used, worker, check or something we don't even consider worthy of a mark. I would reproduce what you can form from your original since it can be documented
Similar to the M code 4 speed though it appears that on that example the worker applying the stripes got the order a bit mixed up. We do see this from time to time.
Because it appears that they shared the same driveline I would suggest using the same green as on the driveline on the forward yoke of the driveline. Would also measure/identify the yoke at the rear. If the same applying the same green. Don't forget to burn the edge where the yoke would have been welded to the tube.
Hope this helps

28 spline was 351 2V or 4V with 3.25, 3.00 or 2.75 gears. 31 spline was 3.50 or 3.91 gears, which should have only been available with the 351-4V. But the 3.91 was ostensibly not available with the 351-4V and yet many were built, so it is perhaps possible a 351C-2V left the factory with a 31 spline 3.50 axle.

How many were built that way? Guessing you have something from the data base /Kevin or a whole lots of buildsheets of 70 H codes

The MPC indicates that 31 splined axles only available with 4 speed manual transmissions.
Those heavy duty drive shafts would have had 1330 flanges and U-joints.

What would indicate a driveline was "heavy duty" - especially in a 3 and 4 speed application with this engine? Would have thought that designation would have been used ofr manual drag pack related drivelines in the applications we're covering on this forum. Not meaning to get into truck and commercial applications :)

I strayed off topic a bit I guess. :-[ Checking I don't have any buildsheets for H code 70s with 3 speeds and axles higher than 3.25; perhaps none were actually ever built that way.

Thanks for checking, Carl. My Mach has a 3.00:1 axle. I know, weird.

Medium Duty? just reporting what is in the MPC, for the 31 splined axle inclusion with manual transmission.

Sorry Scott reread you post and I thought you were referring to drive lines rather than drive axles ::)

Drive line... drive shaft... that is what I was talking about.

We need a "shake your head" graphic.
Trying to do way too many things all at the same time :( Ignore my earlier post - Please :-[
