Another question regarding painting, is the entire underside of the air filter lid painted a semi-gloss black?
And is the raised portion of the bottom of the air filter housing painted a semi-gloss black and does that include the portion that the filter actually sits on or is it only the raised portion inside the filter element and the seat for the filter element stays Ford Corporate Blue??
I see the Cobra Jet Registry indicates these areas are painted a semi-gloss black but I do not see this in other presentations even the Scott Drake concours correct repops are not painted semi-gloss black in these areas, can someone please advise, thanks

Ive been investigating this issue as well. Based on the pics of NOS parts Ive seen and the detailing articles Ive seen the inside of the air cleaner body and lid should be corporate Ford Blue, the same as the engine. Perhaps a slightly lighter or darker hue since temp and humidity can affect color and the air cleaner assy was painted separately from the engine. It also make sense from a cost/assy line perspective that Ford would spray of dip the entire lower and lid the same color. No need for the inside to be a different color than the outside.

I agree, all you say makes sense, but I am curious as to why the Cobra Jet registry is indicating the Corporate Blue was painted over with a semi-gloss black in the areas I have indicated??
Those are the only pictures of an original sample I have seen with the blacked out areas on the lid and lower bowl of the filter housing.
Once the element is installed and the lid is on, you would never see the blacked out areas, so why spend the time and money doing it??
I have also painted my housing pieces a slightly shinier hue of Corporate Blue than my engine, as I agree they where painted separately from the engine.
Need to get my hands on an Autolite filter element for shows will use the Wix element for driving as it flows better than most for performance.

Depends if u want to be concours correct or dont care. The area inside the filter was blacked out on the bottom side of lid and top center of the base and wasnt taped off should be overspray where the black and blue meet.

Thanks specialed, yes I would like to do it concours correct if I am going to all the trouble to finish the assemble with all other concours details.
Can you advise where this blacked out information comes from??

Here are some pics of an NOS air cleaner body for '70 351C (D0OZ-B) I pulled from the internet a while ago. The interior shot looks like it shows blue and black.

This is interesting, unfortunately the under side of the lid is not shown and its larger than the 428 shaker lid, and the lower housing inner bowl area is painted black, but is in reverse of what is indicated at CJR for the 1970 428 CJ, with this pictured entire inner side of the housing bowl surface being painted black with over spray on the blue center raised section that connects to the carb inside the filter??
