Title: Strut bushing removal
Post by: Hipo giddyup on December 07, 2020, 08:34:16 PM
Just disassembled the front suspension on my son’s 70’ mach one. Removed the front strut rods but the bushings and washers seem to be stuck in place. We’ve tried a small pry bar as well as trying to knock them out with a flat chisel and hammer with no luck. Any ideas on how to remove the stuck bushings? Seems as if theyre frozen or rusted in place. Can’t say I’ve ever had this issue with the earlier year cars, maybe I’m missing something?

In 68 they changed in to a tube in a tube so they were very prone to rusting together. Often it is not possible to save them. What I do when I try to save them is first cut off the rubber bushings. Then I use a torch to heat the tubes red hot, then with a punch knock them apart. I saved a pair the other day. I will try get some pictures of them so you can see how they go together.

Thanks Brian, very helpful. Sounds like I need to just cut the bushing out, likely rusted together from all these years. I ordered the replacement bushing kit and with this car the aftermarket kit willl suffice. Will likely retain/reuse the original washers but not worried about the original steel bushings. Thoughts?
