Title: Rear sway Bar frame holes
Post by: Rusty#1 on January 24, 2021, 02:34:56 PM
Hello All,
I am looking for a reference measurement for the rear frame sway bar mounting bracket holes. Perhaps from the back of the rear frame or a fixed point like the front of the rear shackle bushing collar, to the centre of the first hole.
I have purchased a 1970 Fastback (Sport Roof) and the Marti report shows it came with a competition suspension. There was a attempt by the prior owner to repair the frame and it was all removed. I have purchased a sway bar (In shipping) and I am fabrication the sheetmetal frame work for shock mount from reference photos. I currently have the rear frame exposed and drop panels remove and would like to have everything in place prior to reassembly.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks..

Within the next week we will be removing this hardware from my son's 70' Metuchen Mach I as we will be doing some trunk floor repairs. I should be able to get many measurements at that point but unfortunately not sooner. Maybe someone else will be able to supply those measurements quicker than I can..

Hello Rusty, attached I believe is the info you are looking for. The picture is of my 1970 Mach1 with the measurement I have taken C to C. I have installed a 1970 Trans Am racing sway bar which I purchased a long time ago but it is mounted in the original factoy bolt holes. I did this because my original sway bar has large bulgy corners and would hit the P275's I have installed on the 8" wide mag 500's. When you install the holes ensure you tack weld a reinforcing plate inside the frame rail like the factory original, I would even beef that up to at least 1/4" thick, as I needed to use longer 5/16" bolts to mount mine on the spacer tube use on that bar and it would have been nicer if the backing plate was thicker. Trust this helps.

Late to the party,  great response to your question I might add.. I was just removing my rear axle/sway bar this past weekend. And, broke 3 of the 4 bolts off in the frame when removing the sway bar brackets.  :'(
