I am trying to identify the correct distributor part number for a 69 Mach 1 390 4bbl manual trans. The one currently in the car is an Autolite C7AF 12127 AA with a date code of 8L 11. The only reference I found was on Mustang Tek which shows this is a 390 2bbl but the information listed is limited. Anyone have a better reference to help ID what distributor is correct for this car? Thanks!

I think I have seen a page in the 1969 Ford specification guide small size manual (part of the shop manual set) for distributor applications. I don't have it handy otherwise I would look it up for you

Just a hint, you could look in this Forum's library section.

Did that Jim Didn't see anything unless your seeing something i'm not seeing.

Look again. It's on page three, but I bumped it to the top.

I see your list but it shows 2 distributors and I cannot verify which one is correct. Do you know from it since you made it? In one section you show the letters COU Does that mean Cougar or something else? Parts appear to be C9AF-K & C9OF J Mustang Tek shows neither part number on your list. So now what? See my issue?
-
Source references and notes are at the beginning of the spreadsheet. The two distributor part numbers you reference are used with different types of specific smog equipment. I have no idea where MustangTek got it's information. Your "issue" may be as simple as picking one. Go to the Library and look up the information for yourself and if you have a different interpretation, let me know and I will review it with an open mind.

The 1969 service specification manual shows the C9AF-K for 390 Mustang 4 speed applications. I think the service specifications manual s reproduced . I know I find it invaluable.

Thanks Bob Ill check that out.

Since this was a Mustang question I didn't elaborate but FYI the cars C9AF-K is shown for in 390 4 speed applications is Fairlane,Montego,Mustang and Cougar.

Thanks Brian That helps a lot I'm still trying to figure out how a C7AF 12127 AA got in this motor.

Got it Bob Thanks for your help !

Bob Do you have a pic of what this spec manual looks like or a link to where you can find one? I am not finding. Unless your talking about the blue covered shop manuals but I don't think so ? Those really don't have part numbers like I am looking for. Is there a full reference to all part numbers used on a specific year of mustang?
-
The same number can be found in both the factory Shop Manual and the Master Parts Catalog. The identical same number is on the side of the distributor. If you look at the West Coast Classic Cougar website the information found there is accurate and trustworthy. Everyone here is telling the exact proper information too - you ought to be fairly well informed at this point.
Mustang and Cougar shared the same exact 390IP 4V engine in 1969. It's a pretty specific and rare engine.

I am not questioning the information given. It is correct and appreciated. I am looking for reference material going forward for all the other parts on the car that I have to verify are correct or not. That has been difficult and having a reference would be helpful. I have other items that I am not sure are correct and finding 390 related correct parts has been difficult.
I appreciate the info!

A starting point is the 1969 Mustang Assembly Manuals.

Each year has it's on specific service specification manuals. It is part of the shop manual series of books given the cover matches the particular year shop manual. 65-68 had one shop manual. Starting in 69 Ford came out with a set instead of one big one like in other years. It has always had to be purchased separately .

In the 69 Shop manual. Your C7AF-AA is listed.

Bob and Brian Thank you !! I see now what you are talking about. I appreciate your patience. This being a 390 definitely makes it harder to find the right parts !
-
There were probably 15 C7AF-AA distributors for every 390IP distributor made. If the car was ever serviced over the past 50 years and someone needed a distributor then the more common part would have done fine in a time when no one cared about it being the correct one. Millions of 390-2V cars and trucks got that distributor for several model years so it is no surprise that they are common and easy to find.
In the 69 Shop manual. Your C7AF-AA is listed.

Makes sense for sure. I was lucky to land that correct one from West Coast Cougar. No one else has had one so I figured Id better grab it while I can.
Thanks !
