Title: 1969 SCJ upper oil cooler hose
Post by: keeper on March 30, 2021, 01:36:50 AM
Is it possible to repair an upper oil cooler hose end that has a very small and slow drip around the  hose band on the lower end ? Does any one make replacement end bands or do these repairs. Thanks for the help.

There is no repair of a 50+ year old crimped hose. The only things that you can do are replace it with a new one or carry a squirt bottle full of isopropyl alcohol and a rag.

RoyceP, thanks for the reply. Reality is unpleasant at times.

It looks like a fairly ordinary hose. Most big cities have hose shops that can make such things, they are common on semi trucks. In Dallas we have a big hose shop called Texas Rubber, surely a similar business is near you? It would not be exactly like an OEM hose but it also would work and not leak.

What you could do as a temp fix until you get a new hose or yours fixed is to use a Copper flair gasket, they make one that is solid so it stops the flow, you could use them at your block adapter fittings and stop the flow to your oil cooler. It defeats the purpose of the oil cooler but might help your situation.  They sell them at Hydraulic hose stores.  Good luck!

Thanks Armond, I actually did better than that. I live in an oil field town so I took the hose down to a hose builder where he had a nice hose end  fitting with the correct threads and compression seal. It only cost 8 bucks for the fitting and he did  it while I watched . Very fortunate. No more seeping hose fitting and no chance of a blow out. :)

RoyceP you were right on. I am thrilled with my new hose. It is too good of a hose to just let it go by the way side. Appreciate this group of guys very much.
