Title: 66 Mustang K-Code Air Cleaner Base - 5A
Post by: Kingchief on April 27, 2021, 02:05:48 PM
Hi,

Desperately need a 5A air cleaner base for my car. Dropped the one I had and bent the rim!!!!!!!!!!! Just getting ready to spray it after sanding and primer...DARN!!! Would probably have to buy the whole unit and I am OK with that.

Thanks for looking.

Steve

Don't expect a perfect "5A". My Oct 65 build GT K Fastback air cleaner base is shown.

Anybody know where I can have an original base painted??? I have tried and tried rattle cans AND even had a local paint shop try. It came out WORSE than a rattle can job! I have been trying for 10 years to get this base painted correctly and look GOOD!!! Maybe one of the restoration shops could do it when they shoot blue. I just want to drive my car and know that it is correct.

Thanks again,

Steve

Does that mean you have a bent 5A for sale?

No, LOL, I was able to get it straightened out using wood. A metal dude did it and it looks good.

I just need it PAINTED!!! I am NO good at rattle can [weekend warrior] work! Been trying for years and I HATE driving the car knowing the air cleaner is a repop!!!

Thanks,

Steve

I am not sure where it is bent but the base on 65/66 GT350's are routinely bent/flattened on the front edge for more clearance with the Monte Carlo bar I am guessing. I have seen more original unmolested cars that had the front bend then that did not. It is easy to tell a base that originally came on a Shelby compared to a K code Mustang (swap meet etc.) because of that detail. I hope that is not what you are talking about because if it is then you have just gotten rid of a factory historical build procedure detail by "fixing " it.

Nope, not that. It fell off the car and the edge was slightly bent by the concrete. It was not original to the car just an original 5A base that I had purchased from Fred Ballard MANY years ago!

Thanks...but I still need it painted!!! LOL!

When I want real control on paint I use a small detail gun.
I have a nice base, I just want a small nipple (no comments from the peanut gallery).

Going to have it media blasted then powder coated [if I can closely match the color]. The only GOOD service I can find around here! I tried my small detail gun with the paint that I purchased and it was a MESS!!! More on me then on the base! Just tired of removing and redoing it.

Your "5A" date code might all but disappear if you have your base powder coated (if that matters to you). Most of the date codes are very faint to begin with. When the powder coating "flows" (during the baking process) it will likely fill in the stamped indentation so that you won't be able to read the figures.
