Im way down a rabbit hole on this, with a super high frustration factor.
I have a 68 GT390 4speed with PS, no Emissions
Correct Radiator (thanks Bob G!) repop drake C8OE fan & clutch , with no clearance between clutch and radiator.
1. Alt has double pulleys
2. Water pump has single C8AE 8A528-B
3. Crank has 2 pulleys.
There is no clearance between fan clutch and radiator. I have a 69 Water pump C9AE 8505A
I am thinking its the water pump causing the lack of clearance issue?
The Ford manual isnt really clear
Whats needed to correct the clearance issue?
Any guidance would be greatly appreciated!

Where did you source the fan clutch?
That would be my first focus. We will get to pulleys and brackets later...

I think Pete has likely nailed it. The fan clutch looks like one of the ill fitting ones from the auto part store.
The '69 water pump is interchangeable with the '68 unit. Exactly the same other than the bearing size and of course appearance.

I think your going to find the oem clutch has a shorter shaft, which will move your fan back.
Now, lets talk about brackets.
I think the 390 should have a low mounted alternator like a Cobra Jet car. Have you seen the high mount before?
Then we will get to pulleys...

The only difference between the C8 and C9 water pump is a bigger bearing on the C9 part the length or height is the same.

The high mount alternator was only used on X code 390 engines in Mustangs. The same bracket set is used on 360 / 390 powered pickups of the era.
I think your going to find the oem clutch has a shorter shaft, which will move your fan back.

Alternator brackets are correct 'without' emissions as stated by the original poster.

I am wondering how a GT / 390 car would be without smog and how to prove that?

We should likely start another thread rather than chasing this but guessing you you have made the choice not to reinstall the Thermactor system on your car given that you provided it was a San Jose built S code in your signature. You didn't include where the car was shipped to when completed. Was it a Canadian destined car? This should also help with your question #2 in your last reply

- As for your stated issue. Looking at the lower of your two pictures how much distance is there between the front edge of the fan and the radiator core surface?
- Guess while were looking at the possibilities what fan are you using?
- MPC shows that all of the 68 V8s used the same fan clutch (when it was used) except for the S code which had a different part number. Sorry the version I had handle didn't have any of the measurements to compare

Just measured the stock C8OE-B fan clutch. It measures 2 1/8" overall. Far shorter than yours but yours should fit too. I have Hayden P/N 2711on my other car with the stock (and original, not repop) C8OE-B fan and it has a LOT of clearance from the radiator, maybe 3/4".

Car was delivered to Seattle.
PO must have removed all Emissions, and moved alt up where air pump was.
Heads have plugs in them as well.
Carb was replaced in 1989 with a new Holley 4150
Has a 67 air cleaner on it as well.
There is about 1/4 inch between fan clutch and radiator. Clutch hits the radiator cross bar(rod).
I did notice that on the passenger side, the radiator support at the top behind the horn is curved towards the engine and the drivers side is flatter. Pushes the radiator out
Like peeling an onion.

The one in your pictures looks the same as my Hayden 2711 so it probably is one of those.
I guess the easiest route would be to get an OEM style reproduction C80E-B clutch. They are not cheap but probably cheaper than fixing the position of the core support which appears tweaked for some reason on your car. The factory style clutch will give you another inch of clearance.

Agree I think there was some reconfigurations there.
The correct brackets are the same as a Cobra Jet car. That would not change the position of your fan, but at least you will have that information if you are going back to oem. I would suggest rounding up the correct parts. You dont need to put the parts back on unless you really want to.
The pulleys will be a dual alternator, a triple crank and a triple water pump pulley.

It is the Hayden, so now the challenge begins.
