A friend of mine just picked up a Metuchen built 1966 coupe. He sent me a picture of the door tag and I noticed the paint code was missing. I had him send me a picture of the buck tag and was wondering if anyone can decode this line.
M30J-1731
The DSO and the special order number is the bottom line on the tag 23-5166

I think this color was a non standard Mustang color in 1966, thus the "specialness"
This might help
It appears to match the color on the tag.

You may want to hit the newspaper archives to check for special dealer promotions in that DSO. Its fun and relatively easy to search

M30J = Non-acrylicL enamel (I have no idea what the L means).
1965 Color Code 5 : Dark Turquoise Metallic
Number: AE60 1731 - A
Ref: 60-68 MPC Paint section

Thanks guys for the quick response. Twilight Turquoise is a nice color.

Wow given the "5166" Philadelphia district must have sold a ton of special order vehicles that year. Don't often see that high a number for one district May have not been the high production of special order cars (school buses, police cars, fleet orders and the like) but allot of individual orders that year

That does seem odd to have such a high number. The date on the door tag is J20 (September 20th) of course there is no proof when it was actually built but has a lower vin number of 10721. Is it possible that the number carried over from the 65 production to the end of the year?

Yes really odd with an early VIN -
My understanding was that the numbering system should restart at the beginning of the production year but since this was an early car wonder if it was ordered during the proceeding year under a 65 special order number. Still very high number for a production year from a specific district from the examples I have. Had a 65 fastback one that was special ordered out of Los Angeles district and it was the first special order 0001. Figured out it might have been a ploy for the dealer to get one of the first fastbacks. Never could figure out what was special on the car to make ir a special order. RPO exterior color, 6 cylinder auto car. Only option I found was a decal in the glove box showing it had had a FoMoCo compass installed new
