Title: Starter cable support bracket/grommet mounting location- Nov 69 Dearborn
Post by: hopey on July 21, 2021, 09:40:36 AM
Having a discussion about starter cable routing over on the BOSS forum and the question has arisen about where the grommet support mounts. Was it different between plants and or years? Specifically I am looking at a mid Nov-69 Dearborn build.

Osborne electrical assembly manual shows it bolted to the front of the block through the same mounting hole as the battery negative cable ground. Other examples show it bolted to the passenger side motor mount. Unfortunately photos below are of restored cars.

Anyone?

For my efforts I've collected a few examples and was going to cross reference but have not got threw that yet. Not many unrestored cars out there, but a few, but not an area of the car people often take a picture of - one of the reasons your likely having to ask around about

Jeff, thanks I will wait to see what you or anyone else can come up with.

Am I correct in assuming that the starter, cable and support grommet would have been pre-installed on the engine/transmission assembly prior to marrying it with the chassis on the assembly line, leaving only the connection to the starter solenoid to be made?

I am thinking any photo of the underside of the car up on a lift showing the engine bay, steering and/or smog & starter will give a pretty good idea as the grommet bracket would be visible.  Again, unrestored examples as I have found lots of photo online showing restored cars.

OK got through what I have and I think we've come up with the same conclusion based on the evidence available

Three examples showing no bracket attached to the motor mount bolt and the cable appearing to route to the front of the passenger side of the block

Even checked similar engines (H code in this example) to see what the workers were doing there and came up with the same routing. In this case attached to a threaded boss at the passenger side and at the front of the block area

A fairly clear 70 Boss 302 example from a very very early Dearborn car

And a look at a block showing the threaded boss at the front side of a 70 Boss 302 block
