It's a 1967 Shelby GT500.

That's the inside of the 67-up pop open gas cap.
Underneath this is a screw and washer which allows one to remove everything from the swing-away cap and have it replated.
Pulling this off without destroying it is tricky.
I just did this in my build thread.
Another way of removing these is to sharpen a very small screw driver and pry the lips inward. It usually just comes out easily after the radial pressure is released. Afterwards find a thick piece of DOM (2"?), salami cut it and turn it into a curved anvil to straighten the edges. Then plate. Other ideas on removing are in the same portion of my build thread.
Spares are only available via others' gas caps. I supposed one could could just find a crappy spare pop-open top, cut the spring and standoff on the chrome side and get a punch in from the backside to remove it.

Ok thanks Bill.

For those of you who haven't taken one apart, here it is, in order of reassembly:
* flip open top
* spring (stainless says my magnet)
* spring cap (items not shown next)
- seal around outer edge where you see sealant. Seals against gas tank elbow. Not cork but a synthetic gasket
- seal around inner portion one step above where screw sits. Seals pressed in cap on bottom. This one is cork.
* screw with rather thick washer
* pressed in cap which is the item of interest
To get the cap out you destroy a spare and ugly flip open top to gain access to the stud (into which the screw inserts). Grind away at the side of the stud so the screw releases. Insert a drift and lightly tap the cap out.

Bill is this posted elsewhere on the site? May have missed it if it is. If not think we need at least to place it there (with a related thread or its own). Not sure if anyone is going to look here in the wanted section, for a how to.
Just a thought

I was PMing Kyle and I said "I should make this its own thread."
I will and remove my reply with a link to the new thread. I'll include stuff from my build thread.

I wonder if that cover couldn't be removed with a paintless dent removal tool (hot melt glue)?
Probably would be worth a try.
Kurt.
