Title: Correct Carburetor
Post by: bryancobb on February 27, 2011, 11:29:46 AM
Best I can tell in Mr. Mannel's Book,

My 66 C-Code's C6DF-B original carbutretor IS STILL THE FACTORY CORRECT CARBURETOR NOW THAT I HAVE ADDED FACTORY OEM AIR CONDITIONING.

Am I correct?

I am about to send it to Pony for concours refurb., and if it also needs reconfigured for A/C, I want to do that at the same time.

I vote for Pony as well. There is alot of bad talk on the various forums about the company and Jon himself but I personally have never had any problems with him or his staff.
He built me a "custom" 4100 many years ago for the 302 in my '78 F150 with automatic trans, IT was flawless out of the box.
I sent him my Carter WCFB from our '57 Chevy's 283 Power-Pac engine and he even called to tell me what a prestine piece it was to begin with, flawless out of the box.
I then bought a 4100 Hipo "clone" for my '65 289 Hipo and IT was perfect out of the box.

I have never heard of any special internal changes needed to a carb for the addition of A/C, the only thing that "may" be different is your idle speed to compensate for the drag the compressor causes on the engine & if your car is an automatic is most certainly should have an anti-stall dashpot installed.

I DO have a dashpot AND I installed an NOS Hot Idle Compensator in the PCV hose.

Are you sure then that your carb needs rebuilding/restoring?

It does not need rebuilt unless A/C requires different jets.  It works perfect.  It does look like a 40 year old carburetor and it needs disassembled, plated/reassembled to look new.

Brian, It just depends on what you are trying to do with your car......if its a driver then just clean it up outside and re-install the air cleaner, if its being concours restored then you should probably have it rebuilt/restored....

I had my C4ZF-E carb restored by Pony Carbs and it came out great.  I did have a bit of debate with them about the existence of the C4ZF-N carb for the 64 1/2 (w/o PCV)...they said it didn't exist.  They will also make tags for your carb if the original is missing. You will need to specify what you want though since their default is Autolite versus FoMoCo.
