Thank You!

Hopefully I've been able to copy and paste the picture of the "Survivor on Ebay" '66 GT Convertible that was discussed earlier on here.....WHAT EXACTLY is the date code here? the "565", "AS-6", "UCC-M-20" anyone know for sure?
Well, I guess I couldn't take the picture by itself and post it here, its quite a ways down on the listing, its under the "detail pictures".......
Heres the link again, if anyone is interested....http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1966-FORD-MUSTANG-GT-CONVERTIBLE-SURVIVOR-NO-RESERVE-/290537406678?pt=US_Cars_Trucks&hash=item43a56100d6
-
5 65 is the date code.
-
Thanks Charles!!-I didn't catch the car's scheduled build date.....how much before that would be right to date one? the standard 1-3 months?
Also, what are the other numbers? stuff for the dot I guess?--is there anything that identifies the window to a Ford product? is the "565" then May of 1965?
-
I don't know what all the other codes are. I suppose they are manufacturer codes. Dates are usually pretty close to the build date of the car.
-
Here's my first stab at the stamp. I made need professional help.

"AS-6" is some kind of federally mandated designation.
Making a tool for this is fairly expensive. I'm not sure that anyone will be stepping up to do this in the near future, especially since there were other versions/manufacturers to consider.
I have observed at least two other manufacturer's stampings used on 65-66 Mustangs.
Here is the early version:

When I said "stamp" I wasn't meaning a stamp like we use and have been descussing for such items as oil filters and paint ok, ect.....the original vinyl convertible windows were "stamped" into the vinyl using heat of some sort to actually "brand" the vinyl itself, not just ink or paint.
-
Brant, sent you a pm-hopefully it came through, lmk, Rick
-
The VINYLITE was definately the most common, so it would make the most sense to repro that one.

Tony, Did you ever have any luck with Ecklers? I believe 2 of the key people there have left to pursue manufacturing Tri-5 Chevy bodies...........I've got a line on anouther Chevy outfit that seems to have the means to do this stamping and I'm going to check with them to see if their stamps are like our Ford ones...
-
Eckler's is 30 minutes straight up the road from me....Drive by it all the time..
I will have to give them a call... I doubt heavily that they do it there. I will have to "squeeze" the manufacturer name out of them. Should'nt be too hard.. I'll give it a shot. I will probably spend over an hour on the phone I am sure.

I am going to send my source a copy of the immages I have of the VINYLITE stampings to see if theirs is the same......stand by....

Here's another version, from a '66 Dearborn car:
-
Thanks for this Charles!! It "looks" like an ink type stamp in the picture....is it? or were they all in fact heat stamped into the vinyl?
-
Stamped in the vinyl just like all the other ones. Maybe has some polish residue in the characters.
-
Thats what I really figured-Thanks! Do we have any real knoledge as to what brand of window was supplied at what plant in a given year or time period?
-
is anyone going to reproduce the correct rear window since were on this subject. their currently isn't one reproduced correctly

To what degree are you referring to as correct? Simply the brass zipper or other details?
-
other details, looking for the window running right to left zipper that is, the little loops that hang down from the edge of the window, zipper
-
Those 2 items should be easy to replicate. The strap is just a piece of leather shoe string.
-
Charles, Who or sells the tops with the Brass zipper? Or is this a "special order" through one of the manudacturers?
Tony K.
-
Kee Auto Tops sells tops with a brass zipper, not sure if it has to be a special request. Believe the same goes for some of the other manufacturers.
-
Yeah, I know Kee Tops, They are good. I did't realize that they came with the brass zipper. Anyone know currently who sells Kee tops??

Guys, I've got the correct rawhide pulls for the zipper flys if anyone needs a 12" length LMK.

Here's my original Vinylite back window stamp from my 66 Dearborn convertible (built November 1965).
Window is dated August 1965, and interestingly, the "8" in the "865" date code appears to be upside-down, like they inserted the date die incorrectly.

Just wondering if anyone has had any luck in trying to reproduce on of these rear window stamps.
I'm researching tops and thought I'd add another photo to the mix. Here is the window from my January '65 Dearborn car with an August, '64 date code. Name of the manufacturer appears to be "Boltaflex."

Funny, This same subject was dug up over on the VMF today as well.
I found a CORVETTE interior guy who CAN and DOES stamp the vinyl windows for the Corvette crowd.
You have to send them your window and the service costs $75.00 per stamp.
They have all the proper company names and logos to use and can also correctly date the window as well.
They sent me a sample of their stamp on a small piece of clear vinyl, it looks pretty good-just haven't had mine done yet.
I think Brant at VA Mustang most likely has his done by now, might want to ask him how it came out.
Heres the link:

Also found THIS place that HAS made irons for this purpose before (most likely did Al Knoch's) and can make a fixed, non-changeable iron for around $400.00

I just was re-reading the info in this thread and now I have a couple of questions about these windows and tops in general:
DID the zippers from the factory run/zip from the left to right or vise-versa-does it matter?
What exactly is the little strap that is talked about that was in the center top above the window? the rules say something about a hole in that area-something about "no hole, no strap" so IF there is some sort of hole there should be a strap? what is the purpose of this strap? anyone have a picture of an original?
***Again, I have plenty of the rawhide (bootlace) pulls if anyone still needs one, please ask-$NC
-
Zipper usually unzips from driver side to passenger side.
On later '65 cars, a strap was sewn into the top edge of the rear window with a snap on it. This would hold the top up to the rear bow while the zipper was unzipped or zipped up. If there's a hole in the back bow, then this means there should be a snap in it. Of course, this is assuming the rear bow is original to the car.

OK, Thanks, Charles!
