Title: Heater hose strap
Post by: sparky65 on March 12, 2011, 01:41:45 PM
I have the original heater hose strap.  The problem is it seems very brittle.  Is there something I can use to soften it up so that it doesn't crack when I try to put it back in.  Any idea what it is made of?  Is it some type of rubber?  Would a tire cleaning type product work maybe?

It appears that is very similar to the same construction as a belted or bias ply tire of the period with layers of rubber and woven nylon fabric intermixed.

Would not thing that a tire product would help the brittleness - many of them do just the opposite. Might try Zymol's weather strip rejuvenate (or a title like that) I've used the stuff for a couple of years (though they can't legally get it any longer in this great state :(  put the part in a zip lock bag, add a little liquid, seal the bag, rub it around and let it sit for a week (rubbing it in again and again over the period)

Made from a number of natural oils (hands smell like your using a coconut hand cream) and originally designed to bring back old Porche door and trunk weatherstripping

There was anouther thread about this strap a couple of months ago, some feel that they were indeed cut from old car tire sidewalls, and some feel that they were cut from "alligator skin" looking radiator hoses, they also vary in width and length from 3/4" to 1" wide to 8" to 10" long......might consider making a new one using your original as a pattern.......there is a seller on Ebay that has them-claims they are originals but no proof and they are a bit spendy....

Well I used Belt Conditioner by CRC.  I just kept soaking it.  Left it in a plastic bag with it.  Its definitely flexible now.  It is a little sticky and shiny in some spots but I think I can probably clean it up

Next question.  What is the finish supposed to be on the little clip/ rivet /whatever it is that holds this strap to the shock tower brace?

The finish on the small screw that holds the strap on the brace is a natural looking possibly stainless to me, mine had a weird design on the head which I couldn't indentify, I actually found pretty much the same screw at my Ace hardware that was the same size just a different design on the head, I don't think that even AMK has a reproduction for this screw, CT says he has seen Dearborn cars with a "D" on the heads of the screws...

Someone please enlighten me IF you know of a "correct" reproduction of this screw.......

Mine isn't a screw its a push in place thing and the finish looks olive green.

IF your referring to the metal (rather than plastic one) retainer They appear to be the olive drab or phosphate IMHO

Its the metal one and it sure looks olive drab in the areas that are not rusted.  Any idea what this olive drab coating is?  Is it paint?  Is there a way to reproduce it?

Believe the coating is a plating or dye combination. Have been able to reproduce it (been a long time) with clear and flat army green mixed together

I've used Plymouth Plating for the chromate olive drab finish.

Anyone have a photo of the fastener for this strap?

For what year?

Guess we should have ask to have that specified for the thread back when it was started and one of the reasons, I guess, why it didn't get placed in the proper year when I separated the threads by year

Since I think your looking for details for V8 cars did you happen to see the illustration of the routing posted in the following thread? Heater hose strap in 64-5 is a 6 cylinder detail.
