Title: Front Fender to pillar mount & splash shield finish - 1968 San Jose
Post by: bullitt68 on June 29, 2023, 03:49:14 PM
I checked the Osbourne manual and they do not list a finish for the Front Fender to pillar mount & splash shield brackets. I phosphated the splash shield bracket and used primer on the fender pillar mounts. Question is: Were the pillar mount brackets painted on the car with the body before the fenders were installed. Unfortunately my car was repainted and I have no original reference.

Not sure if the dash 6 & 7 listed refers to a colour finish.

Just about all Ford engineering drawings have the finish requirement either in a note box on the drawing, as a general note or in a table, based on dash number. The dash number you asked may include a finish, but there is no Ford standard. I doubt that stamped parts like your pictures show, were phosphated. Most likely they were cleaned after being stamped out then sprayed or dipped. Remember, it is mass production. Time is expensive.

Understood. So I take it that means that the Pillar Brackets were painted prior to fender installation, but after body paint. Or were both semi gloss black?

Both were painted semigloss black before assembly

Also forgot to mention that these bolts (Phosphate) were on the pillar post bracket (head marking #23). There was also one bolt (Phosphate) #23 on the brake booster. I have not seen those head marking before anywhere else on the car. Not sure if this is common or a random fastener. The bolts that came in the AMK kit are cad/anchor markings

The rear upper fender brackets to the forward pillar may have been painted black when they were installed but they were on the car when it was painted body color and the bolt that attached them to the unibody normally had seam sealer applied over it so its not visible once the car was sealed and painted. This different from the practice in 67 at San Jose

Two examples that were handy. Lower right is from 8R165xxx so close to your car. Upper right car the worker cheated and didn't go that high with the sealer. They did on the passenger side though
