My project 64.5 with a 260 and generator came with no dip stick. From what I see because of the generator the dip stick tube is longer than cars with alternators. I purchased a new dip stick specifically for a 64.5 260 with generator car. I changed the oil and put in 5 quarts and a new oil filter. After running the engine to fill up the oil filter I measured the oil level on the dip stick and it measures way high on the stick.
Here are the stats of what I have:
Dip stick length from tip of stick to bottom of stick seat - 24.25"
Oil full level from tip of stick - 2.0"
Add Oil level from tip of stick - 1.125"
Measured oil level from tip of stick - 3.5"
Any idea what is wrong here?
Thank you,
Corey

This is what I have for my June 64' 260..
Dip stick length from tip of stick to bottom of stick seat = just over 24"
Oil full level from tip of stick = 2"
But since you are seeing "more" oil than you should check your dip stick tube that goes into the timing cover. My original tube measures 15". If yours is less, that means the dipstick is going further down into the oil, and giving you an over-filled reading.

Here is a pic

does the tube not have a rolled lip to prevent installing too deep?

Hippo giddyup,
This is exactly the info I needed. Thank you so much. It seems my dipstick is the correct length but the tube is not. My tube measures about 13.75" long so is about 1.25" too short. My oil level is measuring about 1.5" too high. I think with measurement tolerances this explains the difference between 1.25" and 1.5".
Thanks again.

The original request caught my eye (I had "dip stick" problems with a 66 289 GT) but I wasn't sure of the wording used in Ford Car Parts (aka MPC - 1975 ed) sec 60.3 pg 29 - "Effective Length", in this case it's stated as 15.83 inches, and you measured it at 15 inches. That would seem to imply that 0.83 inches is inserted as a retainer.
