Title: Alt Light Flickering
Post by: ChrisV289 on May 30, 2011, 12:28:22 PM
Was going to take my car for a little cruise this morning before it gets to hot out here but my alt light seems to be flickering.  Not sure what the problem could be. The alt belt is tight. All the battery cables seem tight as well.  Thoughts on to what else it could be or maybe something I missed.

Thanks

put a voltmeter across the battery terminals. tell us what the reading is. another test to isolate a bad component is to disconnect the voltage regulator WITHOUT the car running. jump the A & F terminals in the plug. start the car. now what is the reading?? if it increases then the alt is ok and the VR is bad.

Do you have a mechanical voltage regulator?  (as opposed to a solid state VR?)

No...I'd have to take a trip to Checker/O'Reilly for them to test it...Not sure if they are open today...

So here is something new...Turned on the headlights before I started the car and the lights dimmed for a second before it started but the alt light didn't blink.  But as soon as I turned off the headlights, the alt light started flickering again...
