Title: WTB 68 non finned front brake drums
Post by: dkknab on October 20, 2024, 08:41:32 PM
I have the hubs coming from another source but would happily take front hub and drum x 2 for my 68 coupe

You had better confirm what the maximum wear size the inside diameter can be so that you know what is usable and what is junk. There is no use buying a out of spec drum for your occasional driver car. I don't mess with front drum cars so don't ask me.  For example a rear 10 inch drum maximum spec is 10.060 before it becomes dangerous.

Thanks Bob I'll definitely keep that in mind. I was reading in my 66 Ford mustang et al Shop Manual that if the drum diameter is 10.03 or 10.06 then a lining could be installed.  Is that something a local shop can do or does it need to be sent out to someone?

I'd really rather go with new front drums non finned but I've not been able to find any sources.  Rear drums you can find and 4 bolt fronts too but I've not been able to locate 5 bolt fronts that are staked to front hubs.

I currently have some rear drums from a GT350 out to be relined by the one and only shop I have found through extensive internet search that does that. They are 300.00 plus shipping each to reline your core if no other repair work is needed.

I have some drums which are pretty clean.  Are there any markings you are looking for?

I show my car in concours driven so no markings or date codes necessary though if you had something just before my build date of 5 April  68 would be fantastic. And as Bob mentioned earlier,  they do need to be within specs.

Do the front drums have a groove cut around the outside or are they flat?

I'm not sure I understand the question.  Here's my driver side drum from underneath the car that might help.

The picture shows finned drums.  I thought You were looking for drums without fins?

I am looking for drums with no fins.  I was just responding to Bossbill question and showed the drum I currently have which is incorrect.  Hope that makes sense.

I guess another question is when did Ford stop using front non finned drums ? When did they start using finned drums?

It looks like replacements are smooth or with a groove or two around the outside and the originals are finned?
Visa-Versa maybe?

My parts car has the smooth drums (of unknown quality).

According to MCA and other info the originals don't have fins.  So the $64,000 question is where do you get non finned replacements. Any suggestions?

The comment about the groove has to do with a groove cut around the outside diameter of the sides of the drum on a drum that does not have fins. Some non finned drums have the groove and others do not . I believe it is a mfg issue.  It is not however a issue that dkknab needs to worry about in his quest for usable non finned front brake drums. Both sides need to match (groove or no groove) otherwise if noticed it may be a deduction or at least note in concours . That situation would probably even not be noticed . On the other hand a finned drum vs. a non finned drum is EXTREMELY noticeable .

Still looking for a pair of front non finned drums for my 68 V8 coupe. I have the hubs that are to be staked on the drums.

Either NOS, used of proper dimensions,  or source for new ones will do.

Still looking.  I see 2 choices for the front drums at salvage yards. 10x2-1/2 inch flared and 10 x 2-1/4 not.  Which do I need?

I don't know about the "flare" part, but assuming your need is for a 289, it is a 10 x 2 1/4 inch. The 10 1/2 inch is for big blocks.
My sources are "unusual". Ford Car Parts, the infamous MPC (75 ed), was not helpful, but my paper copy of the NPD catalog was. NPD lists engines to width.

Here's a half page copy of Ford Car Parts (the infamous MPC) for Mustang front drums. See how the drums that you found match up. The same MPC page is available in this forum's library.

Thank you.  Think I finally figured out what some of this info means that'll be helpful.  Model B is for Fairlane/Torino and F for Mustang . Service part is C7OZ 1102-A, 10x2-1/4 drum works for both,  67/68. Maybe that'll help me expand my searching adding Fairlane/Torino .

What about Mercury Cougar?

I found these at CARiD. They don't look correct though. Could they suffice?

My current drums as pictured with fins have a flared section that covers the edge of the backer plates. That's not the case with my rear drums that are smooth non-finned drums.

Is there a picture of a correct front drum somewhere?

Still wondering.  Will 65/66 drums work on 68s? The bearings are the same.  Not sure about the spindles. Are they different in terms of the hubs attaching to the spindles? I do understand the geometry of 65/66s is different from 67/68s. Not concerned about that.  Just wondering if 65/66 drums will work on 67/68s.

Here's one of the 67 Fairlane brake drums I got - $25 each, from a NC salvage yard. Does this fit the bill for what I need for my 68?
