Title: Wanted, NOS or excellent OEM take-off parts for 65 K-code convertible
Post by: OldMil on December 08, 2024, 06:03:04 PM
I am starting the restoration on my K-code 4speed convertible and need the following in NOS or excellent OEM:
(1) Driver's side full quarter panel
(2) trunk floors and drop-offs above the frame rail- both sides
(3) Outer wheel wells, both sides
(4) Rear tail-light panel
(5) Floor pan (don't know if I've ever seen a NOS :))
(6) Torque Boxes
Any reply is appreciated, but email is monitored the most at jackm@parkcitycu.org   Thanks!!!
Jack

You may want to consider finding a nice parts coupe built close in production to your car at the same assembly plant.  At least for the floor pan, which you're likely to never find NOS and may or may not be exactly like what's in your car.  Don't think I've ever seen NOS torque boxes for a convertible.  Probably have to patch the originals.  In general, consider patching as much original sheet metal as possible.  If your metal shop doesn't want to do that, find another one that will.

Have bought several parts coupes over the years and they have been many times worth more than paid, when considering time hunting for individual parts/fasteners/clips.

Thanks Charles, I guess I was just fishing and sometimes I'm surprised at what's out there.  I would also be very receptive to a solid parts car donor.  The 65 vert has the unique channels in the rear floor area for the parking cables and I don't think the coupes do (but we can alter as needed).  We have the ability to make/patch the torque boxes.  I guess we could even patch together the floor, but looking at first for less stitching= less labor.

As for the next post, I sent him a text.  Thanks!  I do now have both NOS quarter panels, so I can scratch those off the list.  Thanks again for the responses so far!

All body styles had the same feature/design for the ebrake channel. It was a production period thing not a convertible one. There was a running change for how the cable was routed and a different change point for the design of the floor panel

Couple of threads that address these changes at least when on San Jose cars. Haven't looked and when each took place at the other two plants as of yet

Thanks Jeff!  My car has the channels so this is what I need.  Coupe or convertible is fine if someone has something that may work.  Jack

Jeff,  I'm looking at a donor floor from a 64.5 coupe which I believe should work for my 65.  As to OEM correctness, are there any differences besides the seat risers as to pattern, etc.  Thanks!

As far and the floor panel itself can't think of any differences between what some one would call a 64 1/2 and an early 65 production floor would be other than possibly some holes here and there for things like brake and fuel line retainers or E brake cable attachment. Sure if I missed something one of the early focused members will chime in and make sure you get the most complete and correct information for your project. Guess you might be transferring the date section from your original floor to the new one if that matters to you

Thanks Jeff, as long as it is very close, we can make the subtle changes, and yes, I will be using the original floor as reference and transfer what I can.  Thanks again for your valuable info.  Jack

If you haven't invested in a set of "65 Mustang Assembly Manuals" I strongly recommend you get a set. You will also need the "64-65 Chassis Assembly Manual" and the "64-65 Weld And Sealant Assembly Manual" - the latter showing part assembly order and weld locations. The paper version is better as it's difficult marking up a CD.
