I replaced the pinion seal on a 68 third member and the seal is not leaking but is leaking around the pinion yoke nut. I have replaced pinion seals before and not had this issue. Do I need to add thread seal to stop this leak.

It is recommended that a new pinion nut be used that has sealant on the threads (typically red in color).

Ok, Thanks I will try that. Strange that I have not had this happen before.

Hi to all,
Just as a question for rear axle service/repair. Have you verified and cleaned the vent? This simple step is often overlooked and can cause the axle to leak in many places. Pressure is created as the axle heats up with use and allows fluid to leak out. Simple to remove and clean both vent and vent hose anytime the axle is serviced. A new pinion nut is mandatory when the original has been removed--not only to seal it, but also to prevent it from loosening. This is in the shop manual as well as with most replacement gear instructions. Hope this helps.

Thanks, it leaked before being driven. I ordered a new nut.
