Title: '65 Black Grille Rivets
Post by: Skyway65 on July 27, 2011, 08:34:57 PM
Does anyone have a supplier or part number for the black rivets used on the '65 grille brackets and tabs?

I think I remember Hanson Rivets having black anodized aluminum rivets.  The ones on the grille are probably steel but how could anyone ever tell?

Well, after some research I discoverred that the original rivets are aluminum and that Hanson only has black steel rivets. (part #C1-5-ST) I ordered a few samples to compare with the originals.

So in the meantime I'm wondering if anyone anyone else has already been down this road and can shed some light on a part number or supplier for the correct rivets?!

Gary,
I used gun bluing from the local hardware store.  I took several coats, but finally black enough for me.  Make sure you use gloves or your fingers will match too!

The restorers job is to present the part or parts that replicate what the item looked like originally. How ever you get there is your choice or secret - ;)  but just one of the reasons we set up this forum - to share those "secrets"

Gary,
I assembled my grille with rivets from AMK (painted the tabs first) I used a hand hole punch and punched holes in masking tape. Then I put the tape with hole over the head of the rivet and used semi-gloss black paint and sprayed them. Turn out like the real thing.

Thanks guys-this is all good stuff.  Without this site many of us would be left scratching our heads trying to reinvent the wheel at every turn. :-\
