Title: Front Valance questions for '67 SanJose
Post by: Angela on February 06, 2012, 01:47:30 PM
I should know the answer by now, but I'm afraid I don't. Can anyone describe when the front valance would have been installed and what the underside would have looked like when the car rolled off of the line?

(1) Was the valance painted on the car or separately?
(2) Did the valance come primed from an external vender or would it have received the same pinkish/redish primer as did the underside of the floor pans?
(3) Besides body color overspray, did the underside of valances get any other paint on them? i.e. black-out treatment?
(4) I typically find some undercoating on the bottom side of the valance... how did this happen?
(5) I have seen some valances with date code stamped into the metal and others without the stamped date, and with a yellow ink-stamped part number instead. Are both of these valid for factory assemblies.

Painted off the car

Primed on delivery, most likely.  Primer usually would not match car exactly.
(3) Besides body color overspray, did the underside of valances get any other paint on them? i.e. black-out treatment?
Body color over-spray along edges and maybe a little splattering of sound deadener/sealant applied after assembly

See answer to 3

Metal date stamp would be factory correct, the ink-stamped part number was only on service replacements.

My unrestored 67 San Jose Mustang front valance is just how Charles described. Mine only has a couple very small sound deadener splatter (<1/4") on it. Little overspray on the red oxide primer.

Would agree with Charles post and notes. The sound deadener overspray would have come from the application of sound deadener to the front wheel wells after all of the parts were installed on the car - likely when the stuff was being applied to the back of the headlight area or to the front splash shield

Here is an example of a 69 valance from another plant but it does provide the general look and idea of what is being described

Of course we would be able to find examples with more or less overspray but you get the idea ;)
