Title: Specific Paint Type

How EXACT do we know the type paint Ford used on new Mustangs?  I remember my Dad painting cars with "true enamel" and lacquer in the 60's and then he transitioned to acrylic enamel in the 70's.

The enamel he used smelled like oil base paint, and got all over everything.   

Were Mustangs painted with oil base ENAMEL or ACRYLIC ENAMEL?

Page 24 of Marti's Tagbook explains the transition. Before 12/28/1964 Mustangs were painted with the older enamel. After that they transitioned to Acrylic Enamel. To identify the difference, the warranty door tags used different colored backgrounds: black for the older enamel and gray for the acrylic enamel. Then in 1966 they switched this and the black background meant acrylic enamel.
