Stripping in process, more marks... an "O" with a cross, plus the "asterisk" (it is not an 8 with a line thru, clearly an X with horizontal line... which crosses both the X and the O, tic-tac-toe on the line???).

Anyone know what they might mean? Late '68 Dearborn X code coupe.

Not sure about the crossed out O. Most likely a mistake. But think the X = your engine code

Have heard that the 'D' may refer to disc brakes.
-
It is an X code and does have discs...
-
The "Q" code 67 428 GT500's had a "QD" in that area and the GT350's had a "KD". Of course both had disc.

Ok let me see what I can help with ;)
First we have to make great efforts not to mix marks and definitions from one plant or year to another
First the mark on the right is an "X" with a horizontal line through it - a typical mark found on many Dearborn cars identifying the engine size or at least group in later years or other sizes - IMHO no the typical orientation
This could have been confused (did the first time I looked at your picture) with an "8" - a mark identifying (for Dearborn this year and later) small block cars
The hortanzantal line appears on many/most of the engine identifies at this year this plant
As for the D (as Bob listed - San Jose marks) it did not relate to disc brakes and has been for on cars at that factory with 6 cylinders starting in 64 through 70)
Not certain of the use of "D" on 68 Dearborn cars either (like San Jose) as there are disc brake equipped and non disc cars marked that way. (In some cases the horizontal line is placed through the "D" also)
