Title: 65 Grill Color - Ford "Argent" or Black?"
Post by: rocket289k on June 23, 2012, 12:32:42 AM
Hi Guys,

It's my understanding that the factory correct color of 1965 Mustang grill is a "bluey silver" color (Ford Argent) than than black?  Is that correct?

If so does anyone have a paint formulation for that Ford Argent color?  I haven't been able to track it down in any period correct paint books from the 60's.  I'm not looking for a rattle can solution - I'd rather shoot the paint out of a gun.

I've include a couple of photos posted to the Virginia Classic Mustangs blog that illustrate the color that I'm looking to validate perfectly so you guy know exactly what color I'm talking about.

Regards,

Ron

More of a gun metal blue that leans to silverish. Black is Def a NO. What ever color you call the one pictured is correct IMHO.

The pics are correct.

Ford Argent is NOT that color.  Argent is a silver aluminum looking paint that is the painted part of the horse corral and grille opening garnish moldings.

Keep in mind as well that the mounting brackets in the back are black as well as the tabs on top...The rivets I think get dabbed with a different shade of blue or black, not quite sure on those..

Some service replacement grilles had bigger rivets and for whatever reason, those were painted over with a brush in grille color.

The correct original '65 rivets were usually black or sometimes natural and I have never seen them painted over with grille paint.

Does anybody know the paint formulation for that grill paint?  I'm not interested in using a spray bomb from one of the Mustang parts vendors.

Ron

Even though for your purposes the spray can version is not what you want  as a last resort you can spray a test panel and have it color match with professional paint. I think you will find that although spray cans are not apropriate for other areas that the grill spray can paint will work satisfactorilly in this situation IMO.

Hi Ron, My name is Jeremy Turner owner of Maple Hill Restoration. I restored the 65 HiPo convertible for Virginia Classic Mustang. The grill color is Dupont Chromabase #MM481K, base clear.  This means that you will need to have a clear coat on top of this paint.  I used Dupont 7900 clear with flattner to get the right gloss level.

If you have any further questions you more than welcome to pm me.

Jeremy thank you very much for the paint code.  I really appreciate the information and the offer to PM you if I have any additional questions.

PS - You and your team did a spectacular job on the HiPo Mustang.  It's one of the nicest rotisserie restorations to stock specifications I've seen in a long time.  Well done.

Regards,

Ron

The second question I have is whether or not the interior trim piece of the external opening of the grill is the same color as the grill itself.  I've posted another picture to my original post help explain what I'm asking about.

The trim moulding and the corral are argent.

When we say "earlier" do we know what sort of dates we are taking about? I have a Oct 64 build out of SJ.

Don't know that that thought/belief has held up since 2012 when it was posted. Appears to be a personal opinion rather than "we" :)

Their observations may have included service replacements. Poster was only active on the site for a very short time and has not been on since 2012

IMHO if there was an early color it would not include an Oct 64 San Jose car
