can someone advice on correct finish on upper A arm SHAFTS   for '68  GT 500

The shafts were a darker bare metal , finish. I have seen them Zinc phosphate plated . Some people use gun blueing.  There should be a distinct contrast between the appearance of the darker shaft and that of the lighter shade of the upper control arm frame metal that they are installed in if you want a factory like appearance.

Agree with Bob on this with the finish...I have some pictures of originals I can post as well.  I have also seen yellow paint dabs on the upper control arm shafts.  Just took one off a car last night and can still see what left on there although there is not much left otherwise:
