Title: 1967 C6 Markings
Post by: Paperback Writer on August 06, 2012, 07:22:41 PM
I found several markings on my '67 C6, and was wondering if anybody here might know what these mean...

The numbers below are referenced in the first attached photo:
(1) Is a teal-blue paint marking
(2) Is hand-written in red and looks like it reads "4339"
(3) Looks like it is hand-written and appears to say "OK"
(4) Is an orange, hand-written number "4"
(5) Is a black "X"
(6) Is unitelligible...
(7) Looks sort of like an orange, hand-written lowercase "e"

BTW - The transmission tag reads as follows:

PGA       P
           004     339

(The second line of the tag most likely explains where the red "4339" marking comes from)...

Wow - understanding what each means might be a stretch ;)

Difficult to find automatic markings since many were overhauled and rattle canned with silver paint

What I have to offer.

- The spray teal/green is likely related to the outer case as well a the large 4 at the bell housing. Have original examples of bare NOS cases with these marks on them before they were assembled. Possibly related to identifying a C6 case (the spray paint) and an inspector or worker that machined the bare case.

- the 4339 on the drivers side is consistent with other examples I have - same location though in black only - different numbers

Have seen dates. One restored trans with the OK (could not make that our in the pictures)- though I see those allot more on manual trans cars.

Like allot of subassembles we find allot of markings likely related to each assembly person, inspectors, individual parts and checks.  Guessing you also found a few on the torque converter.

There were a couple of small yellow-orange markings on the engine side of the torque converter.  I haven't seen it since it was removed from the transmission housing, so there may be additional markings on the other side of it as well...

PS - I need to give kudos to the team at Rose City Mustang in Portland, Oregon for expertly cleaning-off nearly 46 years worth of grease and grime.  Here's how the transmission looked when it was first pulled from the car...

Well thank you! But the good thing about that grease is it helps save most of those markings!

Wow there is a name I've not thought about for many years. Been a long time since I last stopped in there when I passed through.

Glad they were careful

Just doing a 69 CJ C6 and has a white 38 where your #7 is and a white 17 where your #4 is. Also has orange sprayed mark on starter dome (seen that before)

Helps support the inspector and or assembler I would think

Have seen that on 65-66 C4's a couple of times - not on later C6s yet - thanks for sharing

Attached below is a shot of the other side of the torque converter - looks like there's a big yellow "2" or perhaps a "Z" on it.

Thanks for your comments too Tim.  I suspect my "orange" markings in locations #4 & #7 may have been white originally too, and they just look orange now because they've been stained by all the grease and gunk that has covered them up for all these years...

When was the last time you were here?

Many years ago. Use to pass through on the way to family (moving north)- stopping at shops and yards along the way.  Have a daughter in the area now so need  to visit the area more than we do - easier to have her visit home I guess :)

Yeah I don't even remember what year my dad bought the business, I think 90 or maybe 89.

Upon closer inspection the part you say maybe ok look as if it were a blue paint there was a little left and by how most of that came off while cleaning your number 6 could have been made with the same paint and it was a 20. Also behind the 4 if you look closely there was a 10 or 13 I would say you can only faintly see parts of it!
