I recently acquired a copy of Bob Mannel's book and have the chapters that pertain to emissions. I have a few questions regarding the thermactor emissions T/E. I understand the the Windsor heads and Cleveland heads used two different types heads one with an internal and one with an external delivery system. The main point of confusion is between an A/T & M/T. Is the thermactor (smog pump) only used on M/T or was this also used on A/T.
Specific car in question:
68 J-code
C4 A/T
A/C
San Jose
delivered to Stockton Ca
Thank you,
-
1967 thermactor was on most California DSO engines.
1968 thermactor (for passenger cars and light duty trucks in USA) was installed on cars with manual transmissions, and automatic cars with Holley carburetors.

Which cars typically came with the Holleys. I believe my J-code came with the Autolite 4300. This emission stuff is quite perplexing. I'm on the hunt for heads for this car and want to make sure I know what to look for. And from the reading I have done in Mannel's book there were a lot of options and interchangeability with the heads.
Thank you,
-
1968 J code automatics came with Autolite 4300 carburetors. For a 1968 302-4V engine, you need to find 302-4V cylinder heads without thermactor holes.
Your car, if sold in the US, originally had IMCO emissions.

So with my set up being A/T it would not have come with the air logs on each side of the cylinder heads, but a M/T would have had these hence the cylinder heads with the extral holes above the exhaust ports.

A 68 J code automatic sold through Eagle Ford in Stockton :) would have been equipped with the IMCO system but not a Thermactor (smog pump and a bunch of hoses) system

For a 68 Small block? Yes only the manual transmission cars received the thermactor system

Thanks a bunch guys this clears up my questions and will help in finding the correct heads. Just for reference do the heads with the thermactor set up fetch a higher price, and do they still carry the same C8OE-D F casting number?
-
Yes, the 302-4V cylinder heads with smog, fetch quite a bit more money than the non-smog heads.
We get asked for them with specific dates, at West Coast Classic Cougars fairly often. Date matched pairs is what concours restoration folks want.

I cant help you with heads, but i have some pics of auto heads without the air log holes. Will post a link when i have pc access to my photobucket account...

Scott, Jeff,
Thanks for the clarifications and info.
Tim,
Thanks for the photos do you mind me asking what you paid for the engine in the photos.
-
found it though the mustangs plus bulletin board off a 3month old advert. I paid 750, asking was 900.
Then i found out it was date correct!
Other associated costs for me though, being in australia, 500 for pickup and shipping, then i got stung with 900 for customs, taxes, etc...
Then i have been quoted 6-8000 for a rebuild...
thats without ffinding all the missing parts and getting them rebuilt too...
But for date correct, im invested in getting it running now, and never regret purchasing it.
