Title: Parking light finish
Post by: Stangly on January 31, 2013, 10:41:04 PM
Here is my attempt to match dichromate plating with paint.  I didn't have much of the original finish left as an example.  Some honest opinions on the match would be greatly appreciated.

First impression... looks painted.

I would recommend getting the part plated properly, you'll be much happier knowing it's done right.

I agree with Charles here....this is a really difficult finish to duplicate with paint.  And also the wiring harness end would not be the exact same finish.  Here is an example of what a finished set with the correct plating should look like:

Guys,

Thank you for the honest input, after looking at the examples Marcus sent it is clear I have missed the target here.  I will have to send them off to get them plated.  I plan to drive the car and plating will better suit this.

Have a great weekend,

Marcus,

What type of finish does the steel socket on the harness receive.  I'm sending some items off to the plater and want to make sure I get it correct.

I am doing the sockets in the same finish....but afterwards I put some oil on them to take down the rainbow effect on them.  The goal there is to give a slight contrast between the two finishes since they were not done originally at the same place at the same time so they should not match exactly.  That little difference seems to make it look more correct.

That makes sense, thank you for sharing your tip.
