Title: Steering Box Markings
Post by: bryancobb on March 07, 2013, 07:24:39 AM
My 1966 Metuchen Convertible with C-Code engine and C-4 Transmission with PS/AC.

Should there be any paint marks on the Steering box?  It has the original HCC-AW tag and I have seen Charles' pictures of how sloppily blackout was done.

Thanks in advance

Don't know if NJ did the steerign box black out - if so the black often covers most or all of the marks

On my '66 from Metuchen (Oct 65 build), my power steering box was blacked out on top and had two blue daubs on one side.  I took some pictures.  Hope they help.

Thanks Truk,

From what I have read, that is consistent with Dearborn cars.  Is there any chance that box came from another car.  Is the casting date a couple of weeks before your build date?

Is the long shaft cut off of that one?

1966 C code convertible - 6T08C135871

Casting date on the steering box is 5H7.   The buck tag has K25 on it.  The warranty plate on the door has 26K.  The build sheet has sched date 26K.

I think it is original to the car.  When I stripped it down, I found very little (unfortunately) that the previous owner fixed!!  There was no indication that any of the steering or suspension had been repaired/replaced.

I had the shaft removed when I took the picture as I am completely rebuilding the box.

All the dates fit right.  Try soaking the case in evapo-rust, might come up nice enough to use as-is.
