Title: 1970 Dash Vin Plate
Post by: 70Twister on November 17, 2013, 09:11:17 PM
Did the 1970 vin plate in the windshield have the vin border decal like the 1969 did?

No.

There are two styles of 1970 dash VIN plates. Both were reverse stamped.

Neither year used a decal for the VIN plate, The decal is a reproduction thing

Hi Jeff --

I seem to recall seeing a weak border on the VIN tags which i have,
just to verify, the image here is -NOT- original for a 69 dearborn?

I went peeking around the net to get a bit more detail on this topic,
and i seem to have found quite a number of VIN tags which had
this similar detail... so, i'm a bit confused ...

Jeff is referring to the border originally not a DECAL but painted on the plate. The reproductions are a decal to simulate the painted on border the 69 models had as it would be almost impossible to repaint this back on. The 70 model did not have this border.

I believe the originals were acid etched on and not silkscreened.

Thanks! Was the vin plate on the 70s  painted a flat black or just bare stainless?

I believe the originals were acid etched on and not silkscreened.

Is that to say that all originals were acid etched? or just 70?

Would paint thinner remove an acid etched vin plate?
(do i need to worry that my 69 vin plate isn't original)

Bob was referring to the 69 dash VIN tag/plate. It is easily to remove with some steel wool but as mention\ed by Chris - not a decal.

Believe all black though the black can burn off from the sun light or be cleaned away with little effort

Examples of different styles and finish on some originals

It appears to be a pretty flat version of black - possibly a plating/coating but paint should reproduce the look ;)
