Title: where to get light blue door color for 65
Post by: philso on December 27, 2013, 12:46:27 PM
I am restoring a 65 coupe, silver blue with a blue/white interior. I am looking for a source for the light blue paint on the door panels. I tried the Scott Drake light blue (L5748) and found out it sprays Silver... not blue. I also tried the Scott Drake medium blue for the windshield trim and radio grill and the white for the dash both of these are good matches to the original color. BUT the light blue they sell for the door panel is not even close... its not blue.  I had the original blue color on the door when I started and it was not silver... it really was light blue. The outside of the car is silver blue.

Does anyone know where I can get a correct light blue for the door panel metal?

My Father-in-Law bought the car in El Paso in Apr. 65.
Have a full history.
The car was built in Dearborn, asm. date is Apr. 20, 1965.
Interior code is 62
seats are blue/white
headliner and visors are light blue, lighter than blue seat vinyl color
carpet is dark teal 1965-33
dash is white
dash pad is medium blue
windshield trim, posts, and front speaker grill are med. blue
door panel is white
door panel trim is light blue, close to the seat blue vinyl color, also close to but not the same as the silver blue exterior

From my experience the only way to get what you are looking for is a color match mix at a paint supply company.  Yes, it rules out spray bombs.

spray cans are not necessarily out. my local paint store can custom mix & fill a spray can.

If you are looking for a perfect match, you will not get it. Why? Time. I got a rattle can from NPD, AP-5748, and painted the whole RH rear quarter panel on my 66 Fastback (scratches). You can't tell the difference between other panels or moldings after painting but there is a minor difference you might see when painting.

Good to know, may be a good option in many cases.

If you are looking for a perfect match, you will not get it.

I think you can get very close to if not perfect provided that there is a protected area available to match.  Examples being a headliner under overhead console and/or under weatherstrip, a door panel beneath arm rest, carpet below a seat, etc.  Places where the sun don't shine and people wear out.

Sorry for the late reply.
Thanks to those who responded.
I ordered the NPD AP-5748 and got what I think is a good match for the 65 light blue used on the blue/white pony door interiors.
