Title: 1964.5 trunk mat
Post by: 64.5gcl on January 08, 2014, 10:00:05 PM
I know I've seen this discussed before but I can't find it. I need to install a trunk mat in my 64.5 convertible. I have a feeling the original mat (long gone) was a splatter pattern but I can't be sure. I prefer the plaid, but want to keep it original so if it was splatter, that's what I'll put in. If it is a toss-up as to what the original would have been due to Ford changing the pattern as 64 went along, then I would probably go for the plaid pattern Butex. Is there a way to tell? Build date was 9th of July I believe (76A M 82 09G 81 1 6). Would the convertible boot bag have matched (I seem to recall it being a black vinyl, but it has been a long time since I had it). What about the jack bag?

Thanks

the jack bag was strictly an aftermarket accessory. not supplied on new cars.

The original trunk mat on a '64.5 was a splatter pattern and would have been made of all rubber.  NPD offers a good reproduction of this trunk mat.  Check them out as well as Virginia Classic Mustang.  The convertible boot bag would have been "ALL BLACK" vinyl and is available in reproduction, but the Repro is close, but not 100% accurate..but close..from the same vendors...NPD and VCM...

Hello Follow 64 owner,
I have a 10 G , Convertible, it has the Burtex backed Splatter design Trunk mat.

It is a Conservator now, but I have talked to a few people, and some think the coupe had the Splatter and the Convertibles has the plaid mat.

The bag is OK but you do not need it, just takes up valuable trunk space and it is not judged.

I can tell you the Plaid is stronger and easier to clean.

On another random thought, in the  trunk the WAY the jack sits is different on a 64 then a 65 I have both Owners manuals, I display them nearby for the judges to review.

God Bless,
Jake

Don't think I've ever seen a splatter on a San Jose built 64 1/2 - always plaid on those early cars like in 65-67

thanks for everyone's comments. Earlier today (before visiting the site tonight) i went ahead and ordered the spatter pattern in burtex.  Sounds like the question of what it should be is still a bit up in the air. Should I stay with it or change to all vinyl or to plaid while I still can? Any further thoughts appreciated.

Good chance - like so many parts (not most) the difference plants used different suppliers/sub contractors from the others in some cases. We seem to find more as time goes by
