You didn't tell us what the numbers/letters are?

Its a generic question, usually a 4 digit sequence as far as I have seen.  I have a few, the numbers differ.

Just interested in what they represent, if anyone knows.  A specific example doesn't change the answer as it would apply to all... ;)

But in any case, one of mine is 0537, others are not handy and boxed away.  Have pics of a 0487, 2407.

I thought maybe date, with the 7 and 8 as end digits, but 3 prefix numbers to that don't cover month year, need 4...

Julian calendar, maybe?! The 4th number being the year. Just a guess at this point without knowing / seeing more examples.

Guess it could be day-of-year, year... ??? Or not even a date...

I agree. My 69 mach1 has the Julian date code of 0359= (035 days from Jan. 1st=Feb. 4th and 9 meaning 1969). My Mach1 was built on Feb. 24th 1969. So, your example of 0537 would mean (053 days from Jan. 1st= Feb. 22nd  and 7=1967).
