Title: two versions of C5OE timing cover
Post by: livetoride60 on January 31, 2014, 05:45:40 PM
Picked up this C50E-6059-A1 cover dated Dec '66 a while back, but just noticed it has no ribs on the top.  The original off my '66 is also cast with C5OE-6059-A1 but has 7 ribs as expected to support the cast iron pump, and is dated Feb 66.  So was the no rib one a later design?  I've never seen one without ribs.

Also there is 7 next to the Fomoco logo on the later one with no ribs (date Dec 66), and and 8 in the same location on the earlier one with 7 ribs (date Feb 66).  Is this the version number from Sheffield?  Seems backwards from the date if so.  I thought version was normally the last characters in the Ford engineering number, e.g. "A1".

Ya know, I'm sure this is wrong and I'll check. But it seems my 67' cover has no ribs as well! I'll post pics tonight or tomorrow.

This is pretty typical of an early change for the 1967 cover as outlined in Bob Mannel's Small Block V8. On page 7-22, the C5OE-6059-A1 part number remained the same since 1965, but the part did change from ribs to no ribs early in 1967 and is depicted quite well. As you have noticed, the 1967 (late 66) cover you have has no ribs, which is indicative of the change for 1967. It is also mentioned that material was removed (excessive casting near the water outlet) along with the ribs during the change. I bet if you compare these pieces further, then you will notice the change there as well.

I will post pics as I said, but Saturday night. Mine has many marks in the dial. Like 12. At least I count 12. DEC? When I post pics, ya'll can decide and then it is definitive!

Ok here it is. And as mentioned before no ribs on mine makes sense since my stamp indicates 67 and  12 marks (so DEC?) I have this listed in the parts for sale area as free to anyone. If interested go there and check it out.
