Post by: Brian Conway on March 15, 2014, 10:34:20 PM
Anyone know how to decipher the  ' DUC. 4  W5 ' on the back side of this C9ZE-6A360-A balancer ?  Thanks,  Brian

Could it be the tested value for ductility (an indication of strength)?

Well, that is an interesting thought and certainly a possibility.  I have seen other C9 balancers with ' DUC. 6  C24  E ' and ' DUC. 4  M5 '.  Brian

My guess would be that its the supplier (sub contractor) marking/ID and a identifier that told them when it was made s0 they could run down a bad batch if needed.

Woohoo - looks like my instinct was correct.  8)

From "Mr. F.E." himself, Mose Nowland, here is the answer:

Balancer hubs are castings of ductile iron for some high performance applications. DUC cast into the hub casting assures that it is the right material.

If you have not heard of Mose, here is something to bring you up to speed:

Just one more reason for me to take him out to breakfast, lunch, or dinner to thank him.

While we are at it, any similar questions out there that you want me to bring up?

Thanks for sticking with it.  I know it is just trivia but I've been asking around for probably 5 years and never got any kind of answer.  Thanks  Brian
