power steering pump
« on: January 06, 2025, 12:00:06 PM »
My power steering pump on my 69 R code Mach1 needs replacing.  Which manufacturers pump is most like (in appearance) to factory original. And no a new seal won't solve my problem.

why not rebuild the one you have? do a search here for 'chokostang' his rebuilding service is excellent.

As I mentioned, this unit is NOT rebuildable.  The reservoir case is bad with rust damage where the seal is.

I would agree to check with  chockostang as already suggested to see if he has a core . You can send him the internal core for possible partial credit even if you can't provide the entire pump with reservoir core. Another option You can also most likely get a rebuilt PS pump from Napa or O'Reilly's and just compare the pump and reservoir to see if it match's. If it doesn't match you don't buy it and have them send another. I and countless others have used this process. Unfortunately many rebuilders do not provide the reservoir . On another note is that you typically can include your swiss cheese reservoir as a viable core because they don't typically inspect them . With all that said a auto part store rebuild PS pump are not the most reliable . Always absolutely only use type F fluid in your pump. Do not let anyone talk you into a substitute.

There are so many variances in pumps and a lot of vendors do not understand the differences. Take careful note of the outlet pipe orientation when looking for a new pump as they're all different - most of us have lots of units on the shelf because we've found out the hard way.

Sounds like you have a good core pump, you really only need to replace the reservoir.
