67 Standard interior door panel
« on: May 29, 2012, 08:46:20 AM »
Hey all,  I was wondering if anyone had pictures of the black standard interior door panel for 67?  I had been under the impression that the trim insert on the panel was supposed to be silver, but mine is more of a gray color, perhaps due to age.  I took the panels off to check and they are stamped on the inside of the panel with appropriate dates.  If the color change is an age issue, is this something that should be replaced?  The panels are in otherwise great condition and I hate to toss them out.  Thanks for your help!

-Brian

Brian,
The trim you are talking about should be chromed plastic. It is quite common for it to turn gray as it ages. I know of no way to repair or replace it. Marty

Yes, that is chrome mylar, "plastic chrome."  I've never tried it, but one of the local paint stores has a chrome stick on pin stripe.  Seems like it could work, just need to get the right size width.

Thanks for the quick response guys.  That's what I was afraid of.  I know it's not a huge deal to replace, but I didn't really want to lose the original panels just yet!

As mentioned - when you lose the "chrome" film your left with a light gray area. Pretty typical after 40 years

Jeff,

So from a show perspective, the panels should be replaced?

Thanks

If your showing in a Concours class - yes if you don't want a deduction. In Thoroughbred a small amount of leeway is given but not as much as in Unrestored in my experience

My daily driver is a '74 BMW 2002. I found this on the '02 forum and thought it be helpful or at least an option.

Some of the guys have also had success with this stuff found in most hobby shops:

Something to think about.
