66 Thermactor / Smog finishes
« on: May 05, 2016, 01:51:28 AM »
I'd like confirmation on the finish types that make up the thermactor system.

Is it assemble to the engine prior to it being painted?

I'm just about ready to receive the engine back from its rebuild.

The car is a 66 SJ GT convertible (sched build Oct 65).

I found this link on the Mustang Tech site: http://www.mustangtek.com/Fordparts/68JcodeSmogSetup.html
Even though it's for a 68 I'm assuming it'd be similar finishes to 65 except the bracket the pump attaches, I remember seeing a previous thread were it was confirmed that it was engine color.

Painted blue: injector tube into heads, both sides plus backfire assy; bracket at rear of manifold plus its hardware; spark plug wire extensions and hardware.
Not painted: hoses; hose clamps; diverter.
Painted semi-gloss black: alternator/smog pump fixed bracket; alternator adjuster bracket; smog pump adjuster bracket;
Not sure: smog pump pulley.
Is the bracket at the rear of the intake manifold one piece or two?

Going to respectfully disagree  with Jim - but sure discussion will clear things up. Some might just be terms used ;)

From what I recall and seeing in pictures of unrestored cars

- Backfire valve, Hoses, T's, steel vacuum lines, brass fittings, rubber nipples, air filter clamp and a multitude of smaller clamps unpainted along with much of the mounting hardware. Some of these are plated (dichromate will work fine) whole the T's had a greenish gold protective coating. Same finish used on the back fire valve nipples also

- Blue attached to the engine at the time it was painted - emission/injector tubes, ends and check valves. Its possible as Jim reported that the spark plug wire relocator brackets were on the engine but not sure both sides were since one used the valve cover bolts but not all were installed when the engine was painted

- Painted semi-gloss black - adjustment arms, back of the pump (machined surfaces natural/machined after painting)  and pulley as well as back fire valve mounting bracket (s) Also air filter housing, top wing nut and mounting bracket

- The pump and alternator cast bracket is the one that has be questioning the finish - seen so many later ones painted on the engine I'm trying to separate them in my mind from 66's will check pictures to see if I have a clear example of a few to confirm one way or the other

I pulled my "Smog Box" down and took a picture of the contents. I removed the smog equipment from a 66 Hardtop San Jose 289 "A" code engine (Oct 65 build car) about 25 years ago. There are some other hoses in the box from 66 and 67 289 engines but I don't know plants or dates.
Note the hoses - C6OE-9H534-J, two of them, and C6OE-9H548-F - none showing paint. Even the ones left in the box have some traces of part numbers although they are too faint to photograph, but no paint. By a bit of deduction, the clamps would be not painted as well. Most of the cars I see are San Jose built, but the engines are all assembled back east.
Happy Cinco de Mayo. Now, go have a margarita.

Now, back to my original question.
Is the bracket at the rear of the intake manifold one piece or two?
I have a 2 piece anti-backfire bracket with Ford p/n C6OE-(9B290)-B on the base, the plate is not marked, and a single piece bracket with Ford p/n C6OE-(9B290)-D.
Add to the list of painted semi-glass black (almost flat - over time?), the bracket for the air filter can, and the air filter can itself.
Add to the list of unpainted: the "T" fitting, 375836-S, with a 4 inch long right angle hose, C6OE--B466-B. What is telling is the clamps have left an imprint (as do all the other hoses) that show no paint. The only marking on one hose is "8FH".
To the list of I don't know (or something has been done to the part by others): backfire valve, C6OE-9B289-C (L3554). I have one painted flat black (it looks recent, like 30-40 years ago) and one natural complete with early American rust on steel parts.
I can only report what I see.

My pump/alternator bracket sure looked blue when I pulled it off motor. Pulley was black. 66 SJ GT.

Would make a good article for the Library but too many projects right now and this is a big subject with allot of details covering allot of different engines. Started doing one just for 67 GT500's with pictures, part numbers and cross references and ended up putting it on the shelf about half done :(

In any case here are pictures of original cars and parts in no particular order hopefully they will answer and illustrate some answers as well as likely starting some additional questions

NOTE: One thing you may notice in 66 is that the engine plant used some parts from "different" applications. Since this was the first year this may have been a result of early supply issues. In most cases you will find this in the choice of pumps  or air filters - either with extra nipple/connections that were simply plugs off with rubber plugs

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Three port back fire valve - have seen the cast bodies with stronger goldish coatings present - even on used/original examples.

Odd angles shot of the two piece valve mounting brackets. L shapped base and a piece of metal to raise the valve since the third bottom most nipple would hit the intake other wise

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Injector manifold ends

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Hoses with some routing notes and engineering numbers

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Adjusting arm for the pump - note didn't check to confirm that the engineering number is correct for the full year

Special index washer for the adjusting bolt

NOS Pulley but same finish that I've seen on hundreds of originals. Different pulleys for different engines, years and options

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

General pump area pictures

6R1598xx - You notice that some of the black paint is still visible on the filter wing nut, front passenger side sparkplug bracket relocator bracket is there though we can't see it from this angle - should have grabbed it off that wrecked car for the collection. You can see where the plant used a pump that had an extra port as mentioned at the top of this post. Air filter lid is the same - from some other "different" application - just to fit the immediate need. IF you have these things on your original car before restoration - document- document then choose how you will restore.

6R1207xx. Normal filter lid - same made to work pump

Just a general over shot of the "major" parts - someone got a little happy with the rattle can :(

Yup, that's them. The component parts I have are usable but need to be refinished, however the backfire valves I have would not pass any judging.
I did go shopping, but when I got back - margarita time. I bought a pound of shrimp and had margarita shrimp, and mustard roasted potatoes, and another margarita.

If you consume too many shrimp, you will create "smog".
From an online dictionary:
prawn (prôn)
n.
1.  Any of various shrimps, especially one that is large or inhabits fresh water.
2.  The flesh of a prawn, used as food.
intr.v. prawned, prawn·ing, prawns
To fish for prawns.

Mine were salt water types from the Gulf of Mexico.
Besides, you guys drive on the wrong side of the road.  ;)

Should there be a bracket on each side for spark plug wires? I only have one on drivers side...

The RH bracket is different from the LH in that it attaches to the forward most, lower valve cover bolt. If you look at reply number 8 (Jeff Speegle's) the 11th picture (third from the bottom) you will see where it goes. As to what it looks like, there's "plumbing" in the way.
