Oil quenching finish

To refinish spindles with a light coat of charcoal met, then dusting of bluish met.
or stripping then gun bluing repair fluid.
Other place, Jeff's reply to a 67 owner.

What do these tones represent?... charcoal (cast iron) & blue met (oil quenching)

Would this finish apply to other cast iron steering components?

The finishes appear IMHO to differ from early to later built cars but the different phosphate and charcoal paints do an ok job at reproducing the original quenching color if your going with paint. Don't forget to do the machined surfaces and the possibility that paint may not be allowed in the near future for MCA restorations

Yes I have used the gun bluing often on the steering components but the problem with paint is that as you screw the parts together it will knock the paint off those surfaces giving rust a surface to start on from day one. And like the spindles remember to reproduce the lighter metals (at least three different pieces of metal are seen on each tie rod once everything is assembled
