ID 4 speed transmission in service on 69 Mach 1 SCJ
« on: March 06, 2021, 12:03:09 PM »
I would like to positively ID the the mannual 4 speed transmission I currently have in service. My car is 12-10-68 build date.  What are the clues I need to look for. Casting dates or part numbers etc... I believe the Vin number is only exposed when out of service.
Thanks for the help,
Keith

Have you looked for the identification tag on the passenger side?

Try the Library. Ford Car Parts (aka MPC) specifically. It has a section on Transmissions. There's a copy in each major year grouping.

Like most things we deal with there are clues that can lead one to a conclusion. Things like VIN (you can get creative and "see" then) ID tag on the passenger side though those can be swapped and traded. Even the inner workings can be replaced so nothing is certain until you remove and inspect the interior parts though the swapping of the inner workings are not very common.

All of the clues and findings will lead you to likely the correct conclusion. If its the original the possibilities are very limited as to type/model

I did not see any tag. I was able to pull off the gear box side casting C8AR7008-D W2. The power drive side
was casted C70R-7A040-A W1. The date cast on both were pretty  rough to read but I am sure the gear box side started with 0 for 1970. I will get some photos.  I do know the previous owner that restored it said it was a 428 top loader at the time. But that was 94' and 10,000 miles ago.
Thank you so much.

Your trans will still  have  the drain plug when your car was built .
