1965 Fastback trapdoor bolts
« on: March 02, 2014, 04:51:37 AM »
Hi,

I am after the 4 bolts for the trapdoor hinges for an October Dearborn 1965 fastback. Can anyone recommend a place to get them? Also, should these bolts be painted the same colour as the trapdoor and hinges?

I am also after the bolts for the prop that holds the trapdoor open.

I was looking at the AMK bolts for the hinges (AMK741) but a review said they were nothing like the original.

Any help would be really appreciated.

Thanks,

John

John,
The 4 screws for the 65 trap door hinge (actually 8, the same for hinge to body as hinge to door) from AMK are correct in size and form, but they lack any head marking. Try 55590-S2 (AMK B-12481, 2014 Cat, pg 115). The two for the prop to the body are 55613-S2, and, from AMK, have a R B W head marking (AMK B-12490, 2014 Cat, pg 116). Prop to door, 42741-S8, Screw, Hex, Ext Lkw, 1/4-20X3/8HH, REC, EXT LKW, 7/16HEX, are not available from AMK. They are the same screws that attach the brake cylinder to the backing plate for 64-70 6 cylinder Mustangs.

There were two different size bolts used for the trap door hinge,
don't know when the changeover was made but its something you
will want to take in consideration before you purchase your bolts.
You can check the size you need with a tap set.

The Ford Car Parts book (Body Illus Sect 610 pg 6) shows both the screws to the door and frame as 8-32 thread (40904-S), with a 8-32 nut clip (45129-S) used at the frame. This would indicate that the door was also tapped for a 8-32 thread. Both the 65 and 66 Body Assembly manuals "imply" a built in retaining device at the frame for a 10-24 thread. I found this to be a small tapped plate (bar?) about 1/4 X 5/8, retained in the frame by a bent tab. The door is also tapped for a 10-24 thread. Those would be deciding factors. Check the tapped hinge holes in the door.
