Autolite Starter Motor to suit 64.5
« on: July 30, 2014, 07:19:57 AM »
Hi, wondering if anyone out there can point me in the direction (or provide a pic or two on the stampings and markings) on the correct Autolite starter motor to suit a 64.5
Are they similar to the generator with a part number / date code stamp and are they the same as the Falcons?

Much appreciated ;)
Regards,
Dom

For a 64.5-65, typically would be no markings stamped into the main body, but originals normally had an ink stamp that identified it.  On the nose end that fits into the bellhousing, there will be an engineering number cast into that piece that can help determine if it's correct for your year car.  Although, rebuilders mix and match parts, so isn't always a given that everything is right.  There are also different end plates.

Another item that is not as easy as it would appear.

Thanks Charles, I'm assuming that there is a difference for M/T vs A/T? is that correct from your knowledge?
I've found some pics of one that says "suits a falcon 260 M/T"
I suppose it's better than the D2AF Motorcraft one I have now...

Yes, the snout ends are different for manual and auto trans.  I'd have to look in the MPC for more info on that.  Seems I remember some starters interchanging between transmissions, maybe certain years?

You'll need to refinish that one a little (what the black covers) but should not be a issue.

Just want to confirm if these starter motor's were all stamped to include the manufature date ( in format Year/Month/Week e.g 4DC = 1964 March 3rd Week) from the start of production?

Refer to Mike Murray reply in the below thread regarding his August Dearborn car, looks like the year is evident but the following two characters have faded...

Here are pictures of the starter on my Aug 64 car. Dearborn, 4v,4 speed. Looks like the one above minus the extra stamp.

Reattaching his pics from that post for reference...

Yes, date code would be part of the ink stamp.
