I stumbled across this. Is it legit? Anyone know anything about it?

Ask the guy for documentation to support that story. My guess is that he has none. Buy the car, not the story.

I actually posted about this car years ago on this forum. I’ll need to find it but that car was here in Phoenix for the longest time. I remember seeing it at a local show and questioning the owner and he didn’t like that. I sent him an email when it was on Craigslist a few weeks ago for sale and this was his response:

My car was built in San Jose.  It was 1 of 6 cars that Shelby and Ford built for drag racing as a prototype.   6 were built specifically for drag racing and were auctioned for $1.00 and had to be campaigned on the drag strip.  If you watch the Carroll Shelby documentary on Netflix, you will see, in the last segment it shows "A" body mustangs on the race track," winning.  I have the build sheet and much, much more documentation.  It is listed for sale with an article about the car on Autabuy.  I would suggest that you come to Phoenix to see my car and I will be happy to share my documentation along with the appraisal.

"if' he was legit then it was still b.s. and will always be. notice that no vin was ever provided or copies of 'his' documentation. thing is some poor schmuck may get taken in on this.  my vote is to just crush it & then we won't have to worry about it again.

I've owned two San Jose '66's and never saw a build sheet in either one. Both had original carpet sets that i replaced. I was up under both dashes too...

Complete and utter B.S.  This vehicle was offered on Ebay a while back as well.  Anyone who knew Carroll Shelby personally knew he was never "chummy" like this clown claims.  This was debunked elsewhere too. I can't remember which forum this showed up on and was dissected and dismantled in its entirety.

I figured it was some sort of scam-Hi Po 289 tags on the fender and an "A" code engine--just the tip of the iceberg apparently.

If you look at how Ford built their drag cars, like the Thunderbolt, this car is not even close.
Ford or Shelby would have specified sealer delete, white since when stripped of carpet the interior is bright enough that you don't need a flashlight, spare/jack delete, dog dish wheels, and so on.
You don't need to hear the story. The car is the story and it doesn't measure up.
